Google to challenge Wikipedia

16 Dec 2007 News, Internet 2 Comments »

Google has announced that it is launching a new rival to the online encyclopedia Wikipedia where users can contribute and edit entries.

In a post in his official Google Blog, Udi Manber says the main goal in launching “Knol”, which stands for a unit of knowledge, is to help people share their knowledge.

The team has invited a selected group to test Knol and because the tool is still in development using it is possible by invitation.

“The key idea behind the knol project is to highlight authors. We believe that knowing who wrote what will significantly help users make better use of web content,” Manber says.

According to the post the encyclopedia is to cover all topics even how-to-fix-it instructions.

The primary issue is that Google will not serve as an editor in any way, and will not bless any content. All editorial responsibilities and control will rest with the authors.

Project Karbala

09 Dec 2007 Computer, Internet, Design, Zahra Productions 7 Comments »

Through the blessings of the Merciful there is currently a joint operation going on between Mubahela.net and Zahra Productions with the aim of presenting the message of Karbala in digitalized form.

Recently Mubahela.net managed to contact the owner of Karbala.com who agreed that Mubahela.net will take over the domain and dedicate a new site for Karbala and Imam Husayn(A) on it.

On the other side we on Zahra Productions managed to get hold of Karbala.se (where .se is the prefix for Swedish domains) and will focus on the Swedish aspect of the site.

Karbala.com and Karbala.se will be two separate sites with one message and aim, Karbala. There will be slight differences in terms of design and content, but the soul of both sites will basically be the same.

Our gifted artist Hedzz will help out with the artwork of the site.

The date for the release of the Swedish version is set to 1 Muharram 2008 (the release of the English version is unknown currently, but will probably be later on).

Since we are in charge of the Swedish version we’ll make a briefing on what content will be featured:

In terms of text a number of Swedish Islamic sites has joined our project and will provide translations of good existing articles to present for the Swedish community. If you have any tips on good articles, stories, poems, writings or the like then please do comment this post and link us to it.

In terms of audio we have a couple of Swedish reciters who will provide with songs, Latmiyyah and sorrowful elegies dedicated to Karbala, mostly in Swedish. Here it might be noted that if you are a musician and would like to have your material featured on the site, then please do contact us (look at the bottom of the site for contact details).
Also lectures in Swedish will be available.

In terms of video we on Zahra Productions will subtitles suitable videos to Swedish and present on the site. Again if you are an artist or the like who want your material featured, then please do contact us.

In terms of artwork we will collect pictures, designs, photos, images etc etc around the internet which has the theme of Karbala and present it in a gallery on the site. Once again if you are an artist or the like who want your material featured, then please do contact us.

Finally we humbly ask all you readers for your deepest and sincerest prayers that this project will be successful!

Google. Who’s looking at you?

23 Nov 2007 Technology, Computer, Internet, Culture No Comments »

It wants to know everything about you. It wants to be your best friend — or your Big Brother. Are your secrets safe with Google?

A very interesting article with interviews from creepy big shots in Google by TimesOnline. Here is an excerpt:

What’s going on? Is Google trying to take over the world’s information and worm its way into our consciousness? When he said he could implant a Google chip in our brain, was Brin not joking, after all? Or have we all got the wrong end of the memory stick?

You only have to spend a few hours in the Googleplex, talking to Mayer and fellow Googleytes, to realise that, if anything, Schmidt was being conservative. Instead of worrying that they are going too far, Google’s top team talk, with poker faces, about a “300-year mission”
that will eventually see almost everything – including, perhaps, one day you and me – linked to the web and searchable online.

Google’s techno-dream comes in three bytes. The first is loosely referred to as “universal search”. Scribbling frantically on a whiteboard, Mayer, Google’s head of search products and user experience, says the web is currently “very limited and primitive”. It consists mainly of words, images and some music, mostly created in the last few years. There is much, much more that could – and should – be online. At its simplest level, this includes every film, TV show, video or radio broadcast ever made; every book, academic paper, pamphlet, government document, map, chart and blog ever published in any language anywhere; and any piece of music ever recorded. Google is currently developing new software that will scan millions of new sources of information to give richer search results.

Dua Kumayl

06 Nov 2007 Zahra Productions, Subtitled, Spirituality 1 Comment »

Kumayl Ibn Ziyad Nakha’i was a confidant amongst the companions of Imam Ali(A) and this sublime supplication was first heard from the beautiful, though anguished, voice of Imam Ali(A). According to the scholar Allamah Majlisi Kumayl had attended an assembly in the mosque at Basra which was addressed by Imam Ali in the course of which the night of the 15th of Shaban was mentioned. Imam Ali said: “Whosoever keeps awake in devoutness on this night and recites the the supplication of Prophet Khidhr, undoubtedly that person’s supplication will be responded to and granted”.
When the assembly at the mosque had dispersed, Kumayl called at the house where Imam Ali was staying, and requested him to acquaint him with Prophet Khidhr’s suuplication. Imam Ali(A) asked Kumayl to sit down, record and memorize the supplication which Imam Ali(A) dictated to Kumayl.

Imam Ali(A) then advised Kumayl to recite this supplication on the eve of (i.e. evening preceding) every Friday, or once a month or at least once in every year so that, added Imam Ali(A), “Allah may protect you from the evils of the enemies and the plots contrived by impostors. O’ Kumayl! In consideration of your companionship and understanding, I grant you this honor of entrusting this supplication to you.”

The video is by al-Manar TV and we praise Supreme Lord for granting us the blessing to subtitle it.

Munajaat Shabaniyyah

06 Nov 2007 Zahra Productions, Subtitled, Spirituality No Comments »

Munajat Shabaniyyah is an intensive and very spiritual invocation, written by Imam Ali(A). It is recommended to recite it every day during the blessed month of Shabaan, but also during the rest of the year. This invocation is one of the favorites among Islamic mystics (Urefa) and recited throughout the year. The great mystic, philosopher and scholar Ayatollah al-Udhma Behjat(HA) says, “Read this prayer whenever you find the mood!”.

This invocation had a special place in the heart of Imam Khumayni(A) as well. He has commented the supplication many times in different angles which shows how great it is. In “Light Within Me” he says, “According to reports all the Imams(A) recited Munajat Shabaniyyah. I haven’t read anywhere that any prayer or supplication was read by all Imams(A)”.

He used to end his lectures with quoting the following section, where the invocation perhaps reach its climax when it comes to spiritual love, ecstasy and divine nearness: “My Lord, grant me complete severance of my relations with everything else and total submission to You. Enlighten the eyes of our hearts with the light of their looking at You to the extent that they penetrate the veils of light and reach the Source of Grandeur, and let our souls get suspended by the glory of Your sanctity.”

The video is from al-Manar TV which, through divine mercy, we have been able to subtitle and present for you.

Below you can listen to the invocation subtitled to English:
